Tip for Photographing Your Jewelry by Diane Merriam
Get a piece of translucent milky white Plexiglas about 1/4" thick. You can set it between two chairs or do as I did and cut out the center of an old card table. Put one or two halogen lights underneath it. This virtually eliminates bottom shadows when taking pictures. For more color or texture, crumple up some tissue paper and then smooth it out again. It blocks almost no light and gives you both color and texture for a background. For area lighting, either take pictures outside on a bright sunny day in the shade or on a very hazy day with little to no shadows cast. During the winter or in bad weather, build a frame out of PVC and hang some white shower curtain liners up and then light from behind with floodlights. Use Blue/White Photo floods from a photo supply store if you can. Halogen is the next preference after that and if nothing else, just use 150-250W outdoor incandescent floods. Especially if you're selling on line, put a ruler of some sort by your item when you take the picture. It cuts way down on the number of emails asking about the size of the object.
